| Programme Note | This piece is my response to a couple of completely unrelated contingencies of the life of Robert Schumann. First there is one of the songs, the near-perfect "Ich grolle nicht" which Schumann wrote in a blaze of creativity in 1840, his famous 'liederjahr' or 'year of song'. Then there is the ominously named Endenich, the asylum which he entered a mere 14 years later at the start of what was to be his terminal decline. The title of my piece is a play on the name of the song and the name of the asylum. It can of course be interpreted in various ways. One of the ways is totally literal, in that the music is between repeat marks and has no end, just like that piece in Schumann's 'Carnaval' where you could keep going around for ever. However I don't expect the music to be repeated in actual performance. The performer, after playing 'quasi crescendo' throughout the piece, will have to find a way of escaping from the piece without ending, by simply fading out 'al niente.' |
