| Programme Note | Composed in July 2005 specially for the Helicon trio of clarinet, cello and piano, this is a work in classical modern rondo form of ABACBA with an introduction and coda. The rondo theme itself first appeared as a deeply felt piano piece called 'Music Begins Where Words Cease.' In 'Helicon' it appears at first as quirky and good humoured and which is subjected to drastic transformations as the work proceeds and is the predominant idea in the development of Episode C. The subsidiary theme B first appeared in 'Roof Top Choral', a jazzy spoof setting of the written estimate for the cost of roof repairs for the Edinburgh Society of Musicians listed building. |
