| Programme Note | I'm fortunate never to have encountered the fungus 'Phallus impudique' which, apart from being inedible, smells very bad. The French also call it 'Satyre puant' and other uncomplimentary names. The music evokes a surprisingly poetic description by Docteur Albert Pilat writing in an otherwise rather prosaic illustrated atlas called simply "Champignons", as follows: "Lorsque par les chaudes journées d'été nous nous promenons dans les forêts tout imprégnées du parfum des fleurs et de résine, le vent nous apporte soudain l'odeur désagréable que dégagerait une charogne." |
