| Programme Note | This lovely traditional Chinese tune was taught to me by violinist Hui Dewar, to whom my arrangement of it is dedicated. The tune is familiar to just about every child in the whole of China; for me to presume to arrange it is the equivalent of a Chinese musician presuming to arrange "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"! I have used a variation structure but without doing any violence whatever to the tune, which appears in its natural form throughout, against different accompaniments and finally against itself. In an act of shameless opportunism, I added an optional descant recorder part for a performance of the piece by Two's Company along with recorder player Andrew Bayly. The recorder stays modestly in the background, embellishing the texture with some decorative twittering! |
