| Notes | Remembering Bali 12.10.02. Day of Sacrifice - Day of Silence. Composer requested work to be withdrawn Feb 2016. |
| Programme Note | These short pieces were inspired by the Balinese festival of 'Nyepi' which signifies the start of the 'saka' year at the beginning of April. It is the major purification festival of the year on the island and takes place over two days. The night before 'Nyepi' the evil spirits are lured into the open with drums, gongs and cymbals in an effort to frighten them away ('Day of Sacrifice'). On the second day ('Day of Silence') everyone sits quietly at home offering prayers in the hope that all remaining evil forces will vanish. These pieces, which use intervals of gamelan scales I noted down in Bali, were written as a memorial to the victims of 12 October, 2002. They were composed especially for Ananda Sukarlan who gave them their first performances in the summer of 2003 in New Zealand, Indonesia, Scandinavia and Spain. |
