| Programme Note | (based on the statue of Neptune, on pediment, Clydeport Building, Broomielaw, Glasgow, where a solitary Triton struggles to control rearing horses.) The performer (in snorkel, flippers and such gear) enters with a conch shell and attempts to summon Poseidon's horses. No response from the stables; he exits muttering - to where his trumpet awaits. The work is performed offstage. Some angry exchanges between Triton and horses lead to a quotation of the ancient Cantus Neptunius, 'Nullae Semper Anhelo,' at which point bubble machines may be started. The triton becomes more and more bad tempered and (still off stage) hurls plastic fish and other undersea debris on stage / into the audience. The work ends with a very bad tempered Triton venting his anger (in a display of virtuosity). JMG |
