| Programme Note | In the course of a conversation about the relative importance of art and work, my colleague Brian Rae promised to paint me a picture while I promised to write him a piano piece. Brian (one of whose claims to fame was to drop an entire set of stone-carving chisels in the cavernous echo-chamber of a tiled public toilet) had just been diagnosed as having high blood pressure, so I designed the music especially to be relaxing and antihypertensive. The result was a surprise to the dedicatee, who for some reason expected something much more lugubrious of me. A few years later I arranged a version for string orchestra in order to inject even more of a sedative effect, and later still I simplified and shortened it to produce this version of the piece, which is suitable for milder cases. When listening to it or playing it, don't drive or operate machinery, and remember, always read the label. |
