| Programme Note | I wrote this piece in 1990 in a version for 5 fiddles. The present version is one of several re-compositions containing the same elements as the original, put together differently. The piece also exists in versions for the Whistlebinkies folk group, for String Quartet, and Violin, Clarinet and Piano. The piece came about in the following way. At Hogmanay 1989 I was talking about traditional Irish music to a friend, Mary Battle from Co Mayo. Through that converstion I came to realise that I know and love a lot more folk music than I had imagined, in particular the planxties and slow airs of Turlough O;Carolan. That realisation stimulated a piece of music which, though not using any Irish folk music, aims to capture something of the genre. It consists of an elaborate filigree of continuous and loosely-formed tunes, against the background of which are set several more definitive tunes in the shape of jigs and slow airs. |
