| Programme Note | For Shinobu Miki and Hector Scott. "Gedenkstuck fur Kaethe" was inspired by the graphic works of Kaethe Kollwitz, especially a figure study, called the "Mourning Man (1919)". He is one of the group of men gathered around the coffin in her "Gedenkblatt fur Karl Liebnecht," [Memorial Sheet to Karl Liebnecht]. The music is a folk-like dirge with a variety of sonorities for the viola which reflect the varied textures which Kollwitz has achieved in the lithograph of the mourning man. |
