| Programme Note | In July 2002 I wrote a piece for the Paragon Ensemble entitled "The Anti-Gravity Machine". This is its companion piece, despite there being no instruments in common. In the former piece, everything that happens happens upwards; in "Bad Heaviness", the opposite is the case. It's a declining piece. The structure of the piece depends heavily on the recorded background, so if the electronics break down we're all completely sunk. Ove a relentlessly descending drone, a group of clarinets (all played by the composer) interjects noisily every so often, and this interjection is in every case a signal to the live instrumentalists. These clarinet passages intervene to change the direction of the music, just like the famous trombone tune that punctuates Sibelius's 7th Symphony; well, not just like that, but something quite similar; in any case, the concept is reminiscent to some limited extent; OK then, there's hardly any comparison. |
